This is where the real strategy comes in. This is partially because you get to build and outfit all of your ships yourself, so each mission is like a litmus test for your latest and hopefully greatest creation. It's undeniably satisfying to take your tricked-out ship into the fray and plough through entire fleets of destroyers, cruisers, planes, submarines, aircraft carriers, and superships. While there aren't a lot of arcade elements involved and the in-game strategy element is light, the carnage is convincingly chaotic and brutal. The outcome of battles, then, relies heavily on RPG-style stats: the power of your various guns, the armor of enemy vessels, and any special "systems" you might have outfitted your ship with. You pilot your vessel in real time, but even the fastest ships feel rather bulky and slow. It's a little tricky to describe Warship Gunner 2's gameplay - it's sort of like a mix of real time action and light strategy. ![]() The actual delivery and presentation of this story is as stiff as that of other Koei games, but the character art is good and it's nicer to have it than not. The player's character, a Wilkian ship captain, decides to fight against the coup and depose the new empire, which entails sailing around the world and sinking lots of Wilkian hardware. It's pretty interesting on the surface, with hardliners in the fictional Asian country of Wilkia deciding to conquer the rest of the world in an alternate-history World War II scenario. Unlike its enjoyable but almost completely unknown predecessors ( Naval Ops: Warship Gunner and Naval Ops: Commander), Warship Gunner 2 takes a fair stab at some actual storytelling to tie its maritime melees together. You just need to get wet and dive in a bit. ![]() Though it might first appear plain, sluggish, and maybe even boring, there's a huge lode of compelling and unique gameplay lurking somewhere below its surface. Then again, it's doubtful that any such mock conflicts could hold a candle to the satisfying and visceral carnage of Koei's latest warship combat simulator. If you've never staged mock battles between toy boats in the bathtub, then Warship Gunner 2 might make you wish you had.
